Benefits of a Fractional CFO Compared to Hiring a Full-Time CFO

Clients

I typically work with:

  • Founders who are starting up and want to ensure their finance function is robust and scalable.

  • Founders who have outgrown basic accounting.

  • Businesses with a finance team or external accountants, but no senior financial leadership.

  • Growing businesses where cash, reporting or forecasting feels unclear.

  • People who work with startups such as advisors, early-stage investors and accelerators.

I meet in person with clients in Bristol, Bath and London, but modern technology means I can provide a service anywhere.

Services

  • I act as a senior finance partner to founders, providing strategic insight and guidance on a flexible basis.

    • Translate financial data into clear, actionable insight

    • Support for investor discussions

    • Help decision-makers understand the financial impact of key choices

  • I build clear, usable forecasts that help founders understand what’s coming and plan accordingly.

    This typically involves:

    • Build medium and long-term financial forecasts

    • Model different scenarios for growth, hiring or change

    • Create cashflow and runway visibility

    • Identify cash pressure points before they become problems

  • For businesses where finance exists but isn’t working as it should

    • Review the current finance setup

    • Improve management reporting and insight

    • Clarify roles, processes and responsibilities

    • Fix recurring issues rather than treat symptoms

The outcome is a finance function that supports the business instead of slowing it down.

The Process

Engagements usually begin with a financial health-check and any focussed problems a client may have. This way I can offer immediate value before we decide the necessary level of ongoing support.

Typical initial projects include:

AI in Practice

AI can improve finance work, but it needs boundaries. I completed Cambridge University Online’s Generative AI in Business programme and I apply the same discipline in practice: start with a clear problem, use proven tools where they fit, and design processes that scale rather than forcing AI into everything.

My accounting and FP&A background means I’m comfortable with data structure, controls and reconciliation, which helps me validate AI outputs instead of trusting them blindly. I use AI where it accelerates insight and reduces admin, and I avoid it where accuracy, compliance and auditability are critical.

Any AI tools are used securely, with client permission and clear boundaries around data handling. Used carelessly, AI can create misplaced confidence. Used thoughtfully, it can enhance clarity and decision-making without compromising control.

About

I'm Peter Gordon ACA and I help give founders clarity and peace of mind over their finances.

I trained in Bristol in Deloitte's Audit and Assurance team where I developed and strong grounding in financial reporting, controls and how businesses operate behind the numbers.

Once qualified I moved to Buro Happold, a global engineering firm were I specialised as a Financial Planning and Analysis Manager for teams in their Berlin office. Here I worked closely with technical leaders to translate complex financial information into something practical and useful.

I left large corporate roles to focus on doing work that has a clear impact - supporting founders directly and helping businesses build finance functions that actually work.

Gordon Finance exists to provide practical, senior financial support without unnecessary complexity.
